What to Expect During Dental Implant Treatment

The dental implant process is generally completed in several stages, including an in-depth planning session, preparatory procedures, surgical placement of the implants, and restoration with a crown, denture, or bridge. Dr. John Dovgan can perform every aspect of your dental implant procedure at our Phoenix, AZ office, providing you with convenient, high-quality care. Understanding what to expect during the dental implant treatment timeline, from start to finish, can help you make informed decisions and be an active participant in your care.

Treatment Planning for Dental Implants

The treatment planning process is the single most important aspect of treatment with dental implants. The information gathered by Dr. Dovgan during your initial consultation will help him place your implants with accuracy and precision for long-lasting success. During this visit, we will use our 3-D cone beam scanner to capture diagnostic images. These scans will allow Dr. Dovgan to evaluate the health of your jawbone and determine the optimal location for your new implants.

Patients who choose Dr. Dovgan for their dental implant treatment can benefit from the convenience of receiving every aspect of care in a single location.

We can combine your scans with digital impressions to create a custom surgical guide. This device is placed over the dental arch during your procedure. A surgical guide aids Dr. Dovgan in placing the posts in the best location at the most appropriate angle.

Preparatory Procedures

Some patients require preparatory procedures prior to implant placement. For example, if you have gum disease or tooth decay, you will need restorative procedures, as these concerns can seriously impede the success of your treatment. These conditions can also potentially lead to implant failure.

In addition, dental implants require plenty of healthy bone tissue to be successful. Therefore, patients lacking bone density will need a bone grafting procedure to prepare the jawbone for the implant posts. Fortunately, Dr. Dovgan provides all necessary preparatory procedures in our office for added convenience.

During implant placement, Dr. Dovgan will embed the implant posts into the jaw to provide support for your restoration.

Implant Surgery

Once you have healed from any preparatory procedures, you can undergo implant placement surgery. To begin, we will administer local anesthesia to numb the gums and keep you comfortable. Some patients might also choose to receive sedation in the form of nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation. Then, Dr. Dovgan will make a small incision in the gums to access the jawbone underneath.

Using the custom surgical guide, Dr. Dovgan will prepare the bone and carefully place the implants. Before closing the incisions with sutures, he may also place temporary restorations to wear during healing. Patients typically require a few months of healing before Dr. Dovgan can connect the final restoration. During recovery, the natural jawbone tissue will fuse to the implant posts in a process called osseointegration.

Restoring Your Implants

When the implants have fully integrated into the jawbone, Dr. Dovgan can attach your final restoration. First, he will remove the temporary restoration and replace it with an abutment (small connector). The abutment extends just beyond the gum line, providing a foundation for your restoration. Once the area has healed, roughly two weeks later, you can return for your second visit.

The type of restoration you receive will depend on how many teeth are missing. For example, we can replace a single tooth with one dental crown. If you are missing a row of missing teeth, you likely need an implant-supported bridge, while full-arch teeth replacement will require a denture. Dr. Dovgan will connect your new restoration to the implants using screw retention or dental cement. The result is a natural-looking, fully functional smile that can last a lifetime with proper care.
